WWII (post?) era Red Ensign (Red Duster)

Image
Red Ensign, Red Duster wool flag from 1930's or 40's The story So this is one of my Red Ensign's, Red Duster flag in my collection and is one of my favorits as it show signs of heavy use. Its a flag that "has been there". Other collectors might go for the mint condition flags but as written on previous posts I go for the used ones, the one with story, the one that has been in duty :) There is no need for me to write half a page about the flag as a symbol as there are several sites who has done this. I like this one : https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gb-ensr.html#red which has a very fine description about the Red Ensign and also a few comments on why it was called "Red Duster". The construction My flag is made of wool and smells of diesel and the classic "attic wool", which also makes sense as the flag was usually hoisted at the stern of the ship there the engine exhaust also flows by. It has the classic wool woven horizontal lines throughou...

WWII Multi Piece Nazi Flag

Image
A classic "old school" NSDAP multi piece flag from Bonner Fahnenfabrik, Bonn a. Rhein. The flag has a lot of (crazy) history but I agreed with the seller I wasn't going to share it in public. What I can say is it was capture in Cologne on 7th of March 1945, Germany when the allied forces took the city. The manufacturer What is also kind of crazy is that the Bonner Fahnenfabrik was actually jewish owned. It had been a family business for many years and when the Nazi's came to power and the nuremberg race law was enacted the flag factory kept on going and produced flags for the very people that tried to wipe them of the earth. I im not into the politic things! I collect flags because the fascinate me along with the history, but I find it kind of fascinating that you hold on the your company regardless. You can read more about the company and how they navigated through the nazi regime on wiki (use Google translate if needed). https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonner_Fahnenfa...

The "Fake" flags

Image
Background This post is to warn unknown buyers about fake flags for sale on Ebay among others! About a year ago I bought a white ensign flag on a flea market. I was very suspicious about the construction of the flag and the fabric used but became very curious as I love to find the history fake or not. The flag had a year stamp on it and admiral stamp as well. I posted it on my old blog and a guy named Paul made a comment on it, saying it was fake as I also suspected. You can argue the flag is not a fake, how can a flag be fake? A flag is a flag. It could be a replica? But when it has the year stamp on it and the flag is more a mid 1900's flag and tries to be something its not, I would say its a fake! Ok. After Paul made the comment and stated they were sold on Ebay I became more curious. I rarely! buy flags on E-bay as there are so many unknown sellers selling cheap crap. If you want to loose your money then go crazy but if you want to buy the real thing then be very carefull and...

Japanese Flag in a Box, WWII?

Image
I seek information regarding this flag and especially the box it was in. The story The flag measures approx. 70x85cm and is a classic "meatball" flag made out of silk. The box is made of wood with some Japanese wordings/letters on and has like a "deepening" oval on the lit. Maybe to put something on it, a candle maybe? Inside the box there is also what appears to be a brass pole top. Under the lit of box there is a Japanese description, which I've tried to get it translated via a picture translation tool but it doesn't make much sense. I think is post WWII, just after even though is identical my signed Japanese flag. Image of the flag and box The wooden box with some writings on a the Japanese flag. The oval is used for ? Topview The box from the side with writings as well. As it is partial picture translate didn't give anything Inside the box. There a letter, a brass pole top thing and the flag. The writing/letter I tried to picture translate. I got so ...

WWII Service State Flag

Image
The German Reichsdienstflagge from World War 2 era The story Bought this German service state flag (SSF) from a friend. It measures 100x170cm and smells very old. Of my old flags collection this one smells the worst haha :D Like an oily smell to it... Its a little dirty and besides a small hole the flag is in tip top condition. The service state flag or Reichsdienstflagge in German (Reichsdienst = imperial service, flagge=flag) was used from 31st of October 1935 until 8th of May 1945 on Nazi state and administration buildings throughout Germany. In difference to ordinary Nazi party flags this flag has the swastika angle in 90 degrees instead of 45 degrees. It is also the only flag that has the eagle sitting on top of the wreath of oak leaves and the black swastika inside. The maker is "Schneider Nossen", which was a flag manufacturer in the German city of Nossen. The company doesn't exits anymore and the buildings are converted to residential apartments. Ima...
